Short bio

Elena Akhmatskaya is an Ikerbasque Research Professor (since 2014), Berkeley Lab Affiliate Research Professor (since 2020), a leader of the Modelling and Simulation in Life and Materials Sciences group (since 2010) and a co-leader of BCAM-Oxford joint Severo Ochoa Strategic Lab on Modelling with Partial Differential Equations in Mathematical Biology (since 2020) at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics. She is an applied mathematician working on the development of novel numerical algorithms for multiscale modelling and Bayesian inference; their implementation, and applications in cutting-edge research in life and physical sciences using high-performance computers. Her research spans from Monte Carlo - based sampling, numerical integration and hardware-specific algorithms to probabilistic and deterministic modelling and simulation of advanced battery materials, hydrogen embrittlement, therapy resistance in cancer and continuous quantum measurements. She has over twenty years of academic research experience in the USA (Cornell University), UK (Imperial College London, University of Manchester), Spain (BCAM), and thirteen years of industry experience (Fujitsu Research Labs, UK, as Principal/Senior Scientist). She has authored or co-authored over 100 research papers; 4 patents (Europe, UK and US); over 60 confidential reports with industry; 3 commercial and 9 open source software packages.
